The River Ferta, also known as An Fhearta in Irish, is a lovely river located in County Kerry, Ireland. It starts its journey high up in the southwestern part of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks mountains, near a place called Teeromoyle. The river then flows for about ten miles (or 16 kilometers) before it reaches Valentia Harbour. This harbour is a beautiful natural inlet that connects to the vast Atlantic Ocean.

The important town of Cahersiveen is situated very close to where the River Ferta meets the sea. This makes the river a key part of the local landscape and history for the people living there.

Exploring the River Ferta

The River Ferta is a relatively short river, but it plays an important role in the area. It collects water from the mountains and carries it towards the coast. This journey helps shape the land and provides a home for various plants and animals.

Where Does the Ferta Begin?

The Ferta starts its flow in the MacGillycuddy's Reeks, which are the highest mountains in Ireland. The water comes from rain and mountain streams. These small streams join together to form the main river. The area around Teeromoyle is wild and beautiful, full of natural landscapes.

The River's Journey to the Sea

As the River Ferta travels, it passes through different types of land. It flows through valleys and past fields before reaching the coast. Its path eventually leads it into Valentia Harbour. This harbour is a sheltered area where the river's fresh water mixes with the salty ocean water.

River Ferta and Cahersiveen Town

The town of Cahersiveen has grown up around the mouth of the River Ferta. The river has been important for the town's development over many years. It provided water and was a natural feature that helped shape where the town was built.

How People Cross the River

In Cahersiveen, there are a few ways to cross the River Ferta and its smaller streams.

  • Old Railway Bridge: One of the crossings is an old railway bridge. This bridge reminds us of a time when trains were a main way to travel and transport goods in the area.
  • Road Bridge: There is also a modern road bridge for cars. This bridge helps people and vehicles move easily between different parts of the town.
  • Cahran River Crossing: A smaller stream, called the Cahran River, is a tributary of the Ferta. A crossing over the Cahran River was opened in 1992. This new crossing replaced an older one that stood in the same spot on Cahran Road.

The Cahersiveen Marina

In the early 2000s, an artificial marina was built in Cahersiveen. A marina is like a special parking area for boats. This marina provides a safe place for boats to dock and is used by local people and visitors who enjoy boating and fishing in the harbour and nearby ocean. It shows how the town continues to use and connect with its waterways.
