The Riverina Water County Council is a special group that makes sure people in the City of Wagga Wagga, Greater Hume Shire, Lockhart Shire, and parts of the Federation Council get clean drinking water. They follow rules from a law called the Local Government Act, 1993.
How Riverina Water Started
Early Days of Water Supply
The story of Riverina Water began in 1938. Back then, it was called the Southern Riverina County Council. Its main job was to bring piped water to towns in the Lockhart, Kyeamba, Mitchell, and Culcairn areas.
A few years later, in 1945, more areas joined. The Shires of Urana and Holbrook, along with the Municipality of Wagga Wagga, became part of this water supply group.
From Electricity to Water
For a long time, from 1942 to 1995, the Southern Riverina County Council also handled electricity. They were in charge of getting power to homes and businesses in the Southern Riverina Area.
However, in 1995, a new company called Great Southern Energy took over the electricity part. This allowed the council to focus entirely on its most important job: providing clean water to the community.
