History of the Auditorium
The Riverside Municipal Auditorium has a rich history. It was designed by a talented architect named Arthur Benton. After Benton passed away, another architect, G. Stanley Wilson, finished the work. Both of these architects also helped design the famous Mission Inn nearby.
How the Land Was Donated
The land where the auditorium stands was a gift. It was donated by Frank Miller, who owned the Mission Inn. The building is surrounded by pretty gardens, fountains, and even a waterfall. This makes the area around the auditorium very lovely.
What Happens at the Auditorium
The auditorium has 1,400 seats, making it a great place for many different events. You can see all sorts of shows here. These include charity art shows and concerts by the Riverside Philharmonic orchestra.
Famous Performers and Events
Many well-known artists and shows have performed at the auditorium. Some famous names include comedian George Lopez and singer Jimmy Cliff. The Whispers and Frankie Beverly and Maze, who are music groups, have also performed. Magician David Copperfield has amazed audiences there. The California Riverside Ballet and Los Lobos, a popular band, have also graced its stage. The Dickens Festival and Children's Theatre events have also been held here.
Making the Auditorium Better
The Riverside Municipal Auditorium has been updated to keep it in great shape. Big renovations started in October 2011. The project cost about $9.5 million.
Improvements Made
During the renovations, many important updates were completed. The building was made stronger to be safe in earthquakes. It also got brand new electrical systems, water pipes, and better heating and air conditioning. A new sound system was installed, so music and voices sound even clearer. The main theater received a new wooden floor. Plus, the historic auditorium seats were carefully restored to look like new. These improvements were finished in about one year.
