The Rivière au Doré is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Rivière aux Saumons. This river runs through the areas of La Doré and Saint-Félicien. Both of these places are in the Le Domaine-du-Roy Regional County Municipality, which is part of the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region.

The main road near the Doré river valley is the chemin du rang Saint-Eugène, also known as Route 167. The main job in the upper part of the valley is forestry, which means cutting down trees. In the middle and lower parts, farming is more common.

Where the River Starts and Flows

The Doré river begins in a small, triangular-shaped lake in a forest area near La Doré. This lake is about 253 m (830 ft) (830 feet) above sea level.

The river's starting point is:

  • About 0.7 km (0.43 mi) (0.4 miles) east of the Pémonca River.
  • About 10.7 km (6.6 mi) (6.6 miles) northwest of the village of La Doré.
  • About 26.7 km (16.6 mi) (16.6 miles) northwest of Saint-Félicien.

From its source, the Rivière au Doré flows for about 20.5 km (12.7 mi) (12.7 miles). Along its journey, the river drops about 103 m (338 ft) (338 feet) in height. It flows through forests, farms, and even some village areas closer to its end.

The River's Path

As the river flows, it passes through several interesting spots:

  • It first goes northeast, then turns southeast.
  • It collects water from a small lake and flows through Lac des Hôtes.
  • It then crosses Lake Ouitouche North, which is fed by four other lakes. This lake has a large piece of land sticking out into it.
  • Next, it cuts through the land between Lake Ouitouche North and Lake Ouitouche South, flowing into Lake Ouitouche South. This lake gets water from several smaller lakes, including Lac Rond.
  • The river then flows east through farm areas, picking up water from other streams and lakes like Lac Lamarre. It crosses Route 167.
  • It goes through a small lake, collects more water, and crosses Avenue Desjardins near the village of La Doré. It then turns southeast and meets the Doré Ouest river. This part of the river drains a large marshy area.
  • Finally, it forms a loop to the north, collects another stream, and reaches its mouth.

Where the River Ends

The Rivière au Doré flows into the north side of the Rivière aux Saumons. This meeting point is across from a small island and upstream from some rapids in the Rivière aux Saumons.

This spot is located:

  • About 11.4 km (7.1 mi) (7.1 miles) west of downtown Saint-Félicien.
  • About 20.7 km (12.9 mi) (12.9 miles) northwest of where the Ashuapmushuan river ends.

From the mouth of the Rivière au Doré, the water travels a long way:

  • It flows down the Rivière aux Saumons for 8.2 km (5.1 mi) (5.1 miles).
  • Then it joins the Ashuapmushuan river and flows southeast for 18 km (11 mi) (11.2 miles).
  • After that, it crosses Lac Saint-Jean from west to east for 41.1 km (25.5 mi) (25.5 miles).
  • Finally, it follows the Saguenay River for 172.3 km (107.1 mi) (107.1 miles) eastward to Tadoussac, where it empties into the Saint Lawrence River.
