The Ditton River is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Rivière au Saumon. This river runs through the towns of Chartierville and La Patrie. These towns are in the Estrie region of Quebec.
The main activities in the Ditton River valley are forestry (growing and cutting trees) and agriculture (farming). Farming is especially common closer to where the river ends.
During winter, the Ditton River usually freezes. This happens from about mid-December to mid-March. However, it's generally safe to walk or play on the ice from late December to early March. Be careful near fast-moving parts of the river, as they might not freeze completely.
Where the Ditton River Flows
The Ditton River is surrounded by other rivers and streams. Here are some of the areas next to it:
- North side: The Rivière au Saumon.
- East side: The Rivière au Saumon and the Chesham River.
- South side: The West Branch Magalloway, which is in the United States.
- West side: The North Eaton River and Labbé stream.
The Ditton River starts in the southern part of Quebec. It begins in the Emberton township, which is part of the White Mountains. This spot is very close to the border between Quebec and New Hampshire in the USA. It's also near Line Mountain and the "Third Connecticut Lake" in New Hampshire.
The Ditton River flows for about 22.1 kilometers (13.7 miles). It generally flows northwards. Along its journey, it meets several smaller streams and rivers. These include a stream from the east, the Ditton East River, and the Ditton West River. It also passes by Mining Creek.
The Ditton River eventually joins the Rivière au Saumon. This meeting point is south of Quebec Route 212, near the village of La Patrie.
What's in a Name?
The name "Ditton" comes from a family name of British origin.
The name "Ditton" was also taken from a large village in Kent, England. This name is used for other rivers in Quebec too, like the Ditton East River and the Ditton West River.
The official name "rivière Ditton" was made formal on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is like a special committee that names places in Quebec.
