The Rivière du Curé is a small river in Quebec, Canada. Its name means 'Priest's River' in English. This river flows into the mighty Saint Lawrence River.
The Rivière du Curé is located in the town of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures. This town is part of the Agglomération de Québec in the Capitale-Nationale region. The area around the river is easily reached by roads like Chemin du Roy and Chemin Tessier. These roads help people living in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures get around.
During winter, the river's surface usually freezes. This happens from early December to late March. You can often walk safely on the ice from late December to early March. The amount of water in the river changes with the seasons. It also changes depending on how much rain or snow falls. The biggest flood of the year usually happens in March or April.
Where the River Starts and Ends
The Rivière du Curé begins where two small streams meet. This spot is in the western part of a small area called Le Faubourg-L'Erpinière. This starting point is in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures.
The river's source is about 1.0 kilometre (0.62 mi) southeast of Route 138. It's also about 2.1 kilometres (1.3 mi) northeast of the main village of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures. The source is 0.85 kilometres (0.53 mi) north-west of the Saint Lawrence River. It's also 1.2 kilometres (0.75 mi) north of where the Curé river flows into the bigger river.
From its start, the Curé river flows for about 1.7 kilometres (1.1 mi). It drops about 73 metres (240 ft) in height along its path. As it gets closer to the village of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, it makes a curve towards the west. The river flows along the edge of Parc des Hauts-Fonds. It also goes down a 40 metres (130 ft) high cliff.
The Curé River ends by flowing into a bay called Anse à Gagnon. This bay is on the northwest side of the Saint Lawrence River. This meeting point is about 11.4 kilometres (7.1 mi) southwest of the Pierre Laporte Bridge. It's also 1.9 kilometres (1.2 mi) east of the center of Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures.
Naming the River
The name "Rivière du Curé" was officially recognized on March 9, 1983. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is a group that names places in Quebec.
