The Rivière des Aulnaies is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Saguenay River, which then joins the Saint Lawrence River. The river passes through the towns of Bégin and Saint-Ambroise. It is located in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region.
The land around the Aulnaies river is used for different things. Roads like chemin Saint-Léonard help people get around the western side. On the eastern side, the rang des Aulnaies road is used. The main jobs in this area are forestry (cutting down trees) and agriculture (farming).
The river usually freezes over in late November. It stays frozen until early April. It's generally safe to walk or play on the ice from mid-December to the end of March.
The River's Journey
The Rivière des Aulnaies starts from Chabot Lake. This lake is about 138 meters (453 feet) above sea level. Chabot Lake is located in the town of Labrecque.
From Chabot Lake, the Aulnaies river flows for about 25.8 kilometers (16 miles). It goes through forests, farms, and even small villages.
- First, it flows east for about 1.3 kilometers (0.8 miles).
- Then, it turns southeast for about 4.9 kilometers (3 miles). Along this part, it collects water from William brook and Fraser brook.
- Next, it continues southeast for about 4.1 kilometers (2.5 miles), winding its way to the Labonté River.
- After that, it goes southwest for another 4.1 kilometers (2.5 miles), joining the rivière à l'Ours.
- Finally, it flows southeast for about 11.4 kilometers (7 miles). It passes through the village of Saint-Ambroise before reaching its mouth.
The Aulnaies river empties into the Saguenay River. This meeting point is about 7.7 kilometers (4.8 miles) west of the Shipshaw dam on the Saguenay River. It's also about 8.8 kilometers (5.5 miles) southeast of Saint-Ambroise village.

The Name of the River
The name "Rivière des Aulnaies" has been used for a long time. On old maps from the 1800s, it was called "R. Des Aunes" or "Rivière des Aulnets." The word "aulnaie" means a place where many alder trees grow. So, the river is named after the alder trees found along its banks.
The official name "Rivière des Aulnaies" was formally recognized on December 5, 1968, by the Commission de toponymie du Québec. This commission is in charge of naming places in Quebec.
