The Rivière des Étangs is a river in Quebec, Canada. Its name means "river of ponds" in English. This river flows into the Rivière du Moulin. It passes through the towns of Saint-Casimir and Deschambault-Grondines. These towns are part of the Portneuf Regional County Municipality in the Capitale-Nationale region.
The area around the Étangs river is mostly used for farming. Forestry is also an important activity there. Roads like Nicolas road and Route 363 help people get around the river valley.
The surface of the Rivière du Moulin, which the Étangs river flows into, usually freezes from early December to late March. It's generally safe to walk on the ice from late December to early March. The river's water level changes with the seasons and how much it rains. The biggest rise in water, called the spring flood, happens in March or April.
Where the River Flows: Geography
The Rivière des Étangs starts in a farming area in Deschambault-Grondines. It begins where a stream called Ruisseau du Grand Nord joins another. This starting point is close to the border of Saint-Casimir. It's also located between the Sainte-Anne River and the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks.
The river's source is about 8.8 kilometers (5.5 miles) northwest of the St. Lawrence River. It's also 4.9 kilometers (3 miles) south of the village of Saint-Marc-des-Carrières.
From its source, the Étangs river flows for about 8.2 kilometers (5.1 miles). During its journey, the river drops about 30 meters (98 feet) in height. It first flows southwest through farms and forests, entering Saint-Casimir. Then, it turns southeast, going back into Deschambault-Grondines. It bends to the east and crosses the Canadian Pacific Railway before reaching its end.
The Étangs river joins the Rivière du Moulin at a bend in that river. This meeting point is about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) southeast of the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks. It's also 4.3 kilometers (2.7 miles) west of the village of Grondines.

The name "Rivière des Étangs" means "river of ponds." This name comes from the many small ponds that used to be in the upper part of the river's course. These ponds were there before people dug ditches and streams for farming in the area.
The official name "Rivière des Étangs" was made formal on August 17, 1978. This was done by the Place Names Bank of the Commission de toponymie du Québec.
