The Rivière des Îlets is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Rivière du Gouffre. This river is located in a wild area called Lac-Pikauba. This area is part of the Charlevoix Regional County Municipality.
The lower part of the river valley is very mountainous. This means there are no good roads for cars. However, the middle and upper parts have some forest roads. These roads connect to Route 381 to the west. The main activity here is forestry, which means cutting down trees. Tourism, like hiking or fishing, is also popular.
The river usually freezes over in early December. It stays frozen until early April. It's safest to walk on the ice from mid-December to late March. The water level changes with the seasons. It also changes depending on how much rain falls. The river usually floods a bit in April.
River's Journey
The Rivière des Îlets starts at a lake called Lac de la Haute Ville. This lake is about 0.7 kilometers long. It sits high up in the mountains, at 949 meters (3,113 feet) above sea level. The lake is surrounded by forests.
From Lac de la Haute Ville, the river flows for about 15.1 kilometers (9.4 miles). It drops a lot in height, about 559 meters (1,834 feet). The river usually flows through a deep valley.
Here's how the river flows:
- It flows east for 1.5 kilometers. It passes through Lac de la Vase and Lac Élysée.
- Then, it goes northeast for 2.5 kilometers. It crosses Lac des Îlets, which is about 1.5 kilometers long. This lake has a unique shape and two islands. The river also passes through two smaller lakes, Lac Willis and Lac Pouliot.
- Next, it flows north for 3.2 kilometers. The valley gets deeper here. It picks up water from Lac Alouette and Lac Rouillé.
- It continues north for 1.5 kilometers, curving northeast around a mountain.
- Then, it flows northeast for 3.4 kilometers through a narrow valley.
- Finally, it flows northeast for 3.0 kilometers. This part has many rapids, except for the last 0.5 kilometers. It also collects water from a mountain stream before reaching its mouth.
The Rivière des Îlets ends by joining the Rivière du Gouffre. This meeting point is in the Lac-Pikauba area.
From where the Îlets river joins it, the Rivière du Gouffre flows for another 64.2 kilometers (39.9 miles). It drops about 386 meters (1,266 feet) in height. The Rivière du Gouffre eventually flows into the St. Lawrence River in Baie-Saint-Paul.
