The Rivière du Castor (which means River of the Beaver in English) is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows through the towns of Sainte-Hedwidge and Saint-Prime. This river is a branch of the Rivière à l'Ours.
The area around the Beaver River is important for its forests and farms. Roads like the 3rd range road help people get around the valley. During winter, the river usually freezes over from early December to late March. It's generally safe to walk on the ice from mid-December to mid-March.
Where the River Starts
The Beaver River begins in Sainte-Hedwidge where two small forest streams meet. This starting point is about 260 m (850 ft) above sea level.
From its source, the river flows for about 13 km (8.1 mi). It drops about 150 m (490 ft) in height as it travels, mostly through forested areas.
The River's Journey
The river's path can be described in a few main parts:
- It flows north for about 4.6 km (2.9 mi), entering Saint-Prime. It makes a turn towards the east in this section.
- Next, it continues north for about 3.9 km (2.4 mi). It forms a large "S" shape, passing through both forests and farmlands.
- Finally, it travels about 4.5 km (2.8 mi) north through farmland. It bends towards the northwest and follows the 3rd range road before reaching its end.
Where the River Ends
The Beaver River flows into the Rivière à l'Ours. This meeting point is on the south bank of the Rivière à l'Ours, near the 3rd range road.
From this point, the water from the Beaver River continues its journey:
- It flows into the Rivière à l'Ours for about 2.3 km (1.4 mi).
- Then, it joins the Ashuapmushuan River and travels about 7.3 km (4.5 mi).
- After that, it crosses the entire Lac Saint-Jean, which is about 41.1 km (25.5 mi) long.
- Finally, the water enters the Saguenay River and flows for about 172.3 km (107.1 mi) east to Tadoussac. There, it mixes with the waters of the Saint Lawrence Estuary, which leads to the Atlantic Ocean.
