Rivka Oxman (2009)

Rivka Oxman (born April 6, 1948, died March 16, 2025) was a very important Israeli architect. She was also a researcher and a professor at the Technion Institute in Haifa. She studied how computers and new technologies could help design buildings. Her work helped create new ways of thinking about architecture.

Life and Education

Rivka Oxman finished high school in Haifa in 1966. She then went to the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, where she earned her college degrees. Later, she became a professor there. She even became the Vice Dean for Teaching in the Architecture and Town Planning department.

She also taught and did research at many famous universities around the world. These included Stanford University, Delft University of Technology, MIT, and the University of California, Berkeley. She also worked at the University of Sydney and Kaiserslautern University.

Rivka Oxman was married to another architect, Robert Oxman. They had two daughters, Neri and Keren.

Contributions to Design

In 2006, Rivka Oxman was chosen as a Fellow of the Design Research Society (DRS). This was a special honor for her important work in studying design. She also helped edit a journal called Design Studies and was on the board for other journals about design.

In 2010, she and her husband worked together to edit a special issue of the journal Architectural Design. This issue was about "New Structuralism." It explored how new design ideas, engineering, and building technology could come together. They looked at new ways to use materials and create spaces.

In 2014, Rivka and Robert Oxman edited a book called Theories of the Digital in Architecture. This book gave a full overview of how digital tools are used in architecture. It included chapters from many different experts. Rivka Oxman also edited other special issues of Design Studies about digital design (in 2006) and a way of thinking called Parametric Design (in 2017).

In November 2017, Rivka Oxman received an Honorary Doctorate from the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona). This award recognized her research on digital design and how new technologies help create new ideas in design and architecture.
