The Roštiljijada (pronounced Rosh-til-yee-yah-da), also known as the Leskovac Grill Festival, is a super fun yearly event. It happens every September in Leskovac, a city in Serbia. This festival is all about delicious grilled meat!
For five days, the main street in Leskovac closes down. It turns into a huge outdoor food court. You'll find many temporary restaurants and grill stands everywhere. Lots of people from all over Serbia and even other countries come to enjoy the amazing food and entertainment. One of the coolest parts is a competition to make the world's biggest burger, called a Pljeskavica! This festival is a big highlight for Leskovac each year.
To make the festival even better, organizers plan exciting things. There are concerts, fashion shows, and even a carnival. They work hard to make it a top event, similar to the famous Oktoberfest in Munich. Many visitors come, making it one of Serbia's most popular tourist events. In 2013, a record 600,000 people visited! Over 200 barbecue stands were busy cooking. People from countries like Slovenia, Bulgaria, North Macedonia, Greece, Hungary, Romania, and France love to visit.
Amazing World Records
The Leskovac Grill Festival is famous for its giant burgers! In September 2016, they set a new world record. A huge Pljeskavica burger was made. It weighed 63 kilograms (about 139 pounds)! This giant burger was 169 centimeters (about 66 inches) wide. It was also 8 centimeters (about 3 inches) thick.
The amazing grill master Predrag Lazarević and his team made it. Another grill master, Ljubiša Đorđević, had held the record before. His giant Pljeskavica weighed 49 kilograms (about 108 pounds) in 2009.
Fun Carnival Time
Since 2009, Leskovac has been an official International Carnival City. This means it's part of a big group called The Association of European Carnival Cities. This group has over 50 members from Europe and America. The Leskovac carnival happens during the Roštiljijada festival.
About 1,200 people join the carnival parade. Many of them come from other countries. The city even thought about making the carnival a separate event. This would help attract even more tourists to Leskovac.
