Rob Hiaasen (born February 9, 1959 – died June 28, 2018) was an American journalist and editor. He worked as an assistant editor at The Capital, a newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland. Rob also taught journalism at the University of Maryland's Philip Merrill College of Journalism. He grew up in Plantation, Florida. Before joining The Capital, he worked at The Palm Beach Post and The Baltimore Sun. Sadly, Rob Hiaasen passed away while at work during a tragic event at The Capital newspaper.

Early Life and Education

Rob Hiaasen was born in 1959 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He grew up in Plantation, which was a small, quiet area back then. He had an older brother, Carl Hiaasen, who is a well-known writer. Rob also had two older sisters. He went to college at the University of Florida and earned his degree there.

Rob Hiaasen's Career

Rob Hiaasen started his career in journalism in 1984. He first worked at a radio station called WPTF in Raleigh, North Carolina, until 1985.

In the 1990s, Rob worked for The Palm Beach Post newspaper. There, he wrote stories about local government and news. He even helped with an important investigation about a dentist named David J. Acer. Rob also worked at other radio stations in the southern parts of the United States.

In 1993, he moved to Maryland. He became a feature writer for The Baltimore Sun newspaper. A feature writer writes interesting, in-depth stories about people and events. Later, Rob wrote his own regular column for the newspaper. He wrote about unique people, like Roger H. Martin, who took a break from his job to go back to college as a student. Rob also wrote a lot about Kirk Bloodsworth. Kirk was a person who was proven innocent using DNA evidence, which was a very important case. Rob worked at the Baltimore Sun for 15 years.

Rob Hiaasen also wrote a short story called "Over My Dead Body." It was published in a book called Baltimore Noir in 2006. This book was a collection of stories about the city, written by several journalists from The Baltimore Sun.

In 2010, Rob Hiaasen joined The Capital newspaper. He worked as an assistant editor and wrote a Sunday column. He also taught as a professor at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism.

Family Life

In June 1985, Rob Hiaasen married Maria Mills. Maria was also a journalist and later became an English teacher. They had three children together. Rob's older brother, Carl Hiaasen, is a famous author. Carl wrote the popular book Hoot. Rob Hiaasen lived in Timonium, Maryland.

On June 28, 2018, Rob Hiaasen was one of five people who passed away during a very sad event at The Capital newspaper. It was his wife's birthday that day.

Awards and Recognition

Rob Hiaasen was recognized for his journalism work. He was a John S. Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University. This is a special program for journalists to study and improve their skills.
