Robert René Alberts was born on November 14, 1954. He is a football coach and a former player from the Netherlands. He has worked with many teams around the world.
Robert Alberts: A Football Journey
Robert Alberts has had a long and interesting career in football. He started as a player and then became a very successful coach. He is known for helping teams win championships in different countries.
Playing Days: From Ajax to Sweden
Alberts began his football journey playing for Ajax's third team in the Netherlands. Later, he played for a French team called Clermont Foot. He also played in North America for the Vancouver Whitecaps. He finished his playing career in Sweden.
Starting as a Coach: Early Years
Alberts started coaching teams in Sweden. After that, he moved to Malaysia. There, he led Kedah FA to win the league and the Malaysia Cup in 1993. This was a big achievement for him.
He also coached in Singapore. He worked with Tanjong Pagar United and Home United. With Home United, he won the Singapore Premier League title in 1999.
Coaching Youth in South Korea
Later, Alberts worked with young players in South Korea. He coached the Under-19 teams, helping to develop future football stars.
Success in Indonesia: Winning Titles
Alberts became the manager of Arema Indonesia in the Indonesian Super League. In the 2009–10 season, he led them to become champions. He was the first foreign manager to win Indonesia's top league in his very first season.
Coaching Sarawak FA: Two Times a Charm
Alberts coached Sarawak FA twice. His first time was from 2008 to 2009. He returned to the team in 2011. During his second time with Sarawak, the team won the Premier League in 2013. They also finished second in 2011. Both times, they moved up to the Super League. In 2013, Sarawak also reached the semi-finals of the Malaysia Cup under his guidance. He left Sarawak in 2015.
Return to PSM Makassar
In June 2016, Alberts went back to coach PSM Makassar. He had coached them briefly in 2010. In the 2018 Liga 1 season, he guided PSM Makassar to finish in second place.
Leading Persib Bandung
Alberts later signed with Persib Bandung before the 2019 Liga 1 season. He led Persib to finish as runner-up in the 2021–22 Liga 1 season. On August 10, 2022, he decided to step down from his role. However, in 2024, he returned to Persib Bandung as the club's technical director.
