Early Life and Education

Robert Bruce was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on December 28, 1718. His parents were Alexander Bruce of Kennet and Mary Balfour.

Becoming a Lawyer and Judge

In January 1743, Robert Bruce became a member of the Faculty of Advocates. This group is made up of lawyers in Scotland. He worked as a professor at the University of Edinburgh from 1758 to 1764. There, he taught about the laws of nature and nations.

In 1760, he became a Sheriff-Depute for the areas of Stirling and Clackmannan. This job was like a local judge. Later, in 1764, he was chosen to be a Senator of the College of Justice. This meant he became a senior judge, and that is when he got the title Lord Kennet. In 1769, he became a Lord of Justiciary, which is an even higher judicial position.

Royal Society of Edinburgh

In 1783, Robert Bruce helped start the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a famous group of smart people who study science and other important topics. At this time, he lived in George Square in Edinburgh.

Later Life

Robert Bruce passed away at his home, Kennet House, on April 8, 1785.

Family Life

Robert Bruce married Helen Abercromby on June 6, 1754. They had a large family with seven sons and one daughter. Their first son, Alexander, was born in Edinburgh in 1755. He later became Robert's heir. Their other six children were born at Kennet House between 1757 and 1771.

Robert Bruce also had several interesting relatives. His nephew was James Abercromby, 1st Baron Dunfermline. His sister, Margaret, married Sir Lawrence Dundas, 1st Baronet.
