Robert J. Contee III, born around 1972, is a former top police officer from Washington, D.C., United States. He used to be the Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, which is the main police force for the city. Mayor Muriel Bowser chose him for this important job in 2021. He retired from the police department in May 2023.

Robert Contee's Story
Growing Up and Learning
Robert Contee grew up in a neighborhood called Carver Langston in Washington, D.C. When he was a teenager, he had many different jobs. He also joined a special program for young leaders. This program was started by the mayor at the time, Marion Barry.
At just 17 years old, while still attending Spingarn High School, Robert Contee became a police cadet. A cadet is like a trainee who learns about police work. He later earned a bachelor's degree from George Washington University. His degree focused on Police Science. He also completed special training programs for police leaders.
His Police Journey
Robert Contee officially joined the Metropolitan Police Department as a cadet in 1989. He became a sworn police officer in 1992. He started working in the Third District of D.C. He quickly moved up in the police ranks. He became a sergeant and then a lieutenant.

He worked in many different parts of the police department. He was a leader in various police areas. He also helped lead the intelligence branch. This branch gathers important information.
Important Moments in His Career
In 2004, Contee became a commander in the Second District. He then moved to the Special Operations Division in 2006. Here, he helped manage special events and traffic safety. He also oversaw tactical patrols.
Later, he became commander of the Sixth District in 2007. In 2014, he took charge of the Recruiting Division. This division helps find new police officers. He became commander of the First District in 2016. After that, he was appointed Assistant Chief. He oversaw many important parts of the police department. This included human resources and training new officers.
In April 2017, Chief Contee became the Patrol Chief for Patrol Services South. This role meant he was in charge of several police districts.
Becoming Chief of Police
On January 2, 2021, Mayor Muriel Bowser promoted Robert Contee to Chief of Police. This was a very important job. Just four days later, the U.S. Capitol Building was attacked. Chief Contee played a key role in responding to this event. He often speaks at the DC Police Leadership Academy. This academy helps train future police leaders.
Moving to the FBI
On April 26, 2023, Robert Contee announced he was retiring from the Metropolitan Police Department. He accepted a new job as an assistant director at the FBI. The FBI is a major law enforcement agency in the United States.
