The inauguration of Joe Biden was a special ceremony held on January 20, 2021. This event marked the official start of Joe Biden's four-year term as the 46th President of the United States. It also began the term of Kamala Harris as the Vice President of the United States.
A public ceremony took place on the West Front of the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.. This was the 59th time a U.S. president has been inaugurated.
During the ceremony, Joe Biden took the oath of office to become president. Kamala Harris also took her oath of office to become vice president. The Chief Justice, John Roberts, gave Biden his oath. Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor gave Harris her oath.
Most events had fewer people than usual. This was because of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. People attending needed to wear masks. Temperature checks and social distancing were also used for safety.
A Special Day for Young Americans
For the first time ever, a live online event for kids was part of the inauguration. This show was called "Our White House: An Inaugural Celebration for Young Americans." It was hosted by Keke Palmer. The event happened before and during the main inauguration ceremony. It started at 10 a.m. EST. The show also featured a segment about presidential pets. This included Joe Biden's dogs.
