Restoring the Family Titles
For many years, the Dalzell family had lost their noble titles. These titles included Earl of Carnwath and Lord Dalzell. They were taken away because Robert's grandfather, the 5th Earl, had supported a rebellion in 1715. This rebellion was called the Jacobite cause or "Lord Mar's Revolt." When someone's titles are taken away like this, it is called an attainder.
Robert Alexander Dalzell worked hard to fix this. He wanted to bring honor back to his family. In 1826, he succeeded! The British Parliament passed a special law. This law reversed the attainder. It meant that all the family titles were given back to him. This was a very important moment for the Dalzell family.
Later Life and Legacy
Robert Alexander Dalzell, the 6th Earl of Carnwath, passed away on January 1, 1839. He was 70 years old. After his death, his son, Thomas Dalzell, inherited the titles and became the 7th Earl of Carnwath. Robert Dalzell is remembered for his military career and for successfully restoring his family's noble status.
