Early Life and Royal Service
Sir Robert Gordon was knighted on May 17, 1590. This special honor happened during the coronation of Anne of Denmark, who became Queen of Scotland.
He served King James VI and I as a Gentleman of the Bedchamber. This was a close and important role, meaning he was a personal attendant to the King.
Tournament Champion
In January 1610, Sir Robert Gordon took part in a special tournament. This event was for Prince Henry, the King's son. The tournament was inspired by the legends of King Arthur.
It was held in the old Banqueting Hall at Whitehall Palace. A historian named Robert Johnston wrote about Sir Robert's strength. He mentioned that Gordon won a prize as a runner-up in the competition.
Promoting New Colonies
Sir Robert Gordon of Lochinvar was very interested in creating new settlements. He supported plans to establish colonies in North America.
On November 8, 1621, he received a special document called a charter. This charter gave him land in Nova Scotia to create a new area called the Barony of Galloway.
Encouraging Settlers
In 1625, Sir Robert wrote a book to encourage people to join these new settlements. The book was titled Encouragements for such as shall have intention to bee Undertakers in the new plantation of Cape Briton ... By mee Lochinvar.
He likely encouraged Scottish people to land at Baleine on Cape Breton Island. These early settlers were led by James Stewart, 4th Lord Ochiltree.
Family Life
Sir Robert Gordon married Elizabeth Ruthven. She was the daughter of William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie and Dorothea Stewart. Elizabeth's sisters, Barbara and Beatrix Ruthven, were close friends of Queen Anne of Denmark.
