Robert Hodgson (born around 1773, died October 9, 1844) was an important church leader in England. He was a member of the Royal Society, a group that promotes science. He served as the Dean of Carlisle for many years, from 1820 until his death.

Robert Hodgson was born in early 1773 in Congleton, England. His parents were Robert Hodgson and Mildred Porteus. He was baptized on September 22, 1773, at St Peter's Church, Congleton.
Family Connections
Robert Hodgson was related to Beilby Porteus, who was a very important church leader. Beilby Porteus served as the Bishop of London. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Christian church. Robert Hodgson even wrote a book about Bishop Porteus's life.
Education and Career
Hodgson went to school at Macclesfield School. Later, he studied at Peterhouse, Cambridge, a famous university. He finished his studies in 1795. He was known as a "Wrangler," which means he was one of the top students in math that year.
For over 40 years, from 1803 until his death, he was the rector of St George's, Hanover Square. A rector is the main priest in charge of a church and its area.

Robert Hodgson married Mary Tucker on February 23, 1804. They had several children together.
Their Children
One of their sons was George Henry Hodgson. He became a Lieutenant in the navy. Sadly, he was part of the Franklin Expedition, a famous journey to explore the Arctic that ended in tragedy.
Their daughter, Henrietta Mildred Hodgson, also had an important family connection. She was the great-grandmother of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. This means Robert Hodgson is a distant ancestor of the current British Royal Family!
