Robert Hughes (born June 21, 1989) is an American former professional football player. He played as a fullback in the National Football League (NFL). Before joining the NFL, he played college football for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. During his college career, he ran for 1,392 yards and caught 43 passes for 370 yards. He started his NFL journey when the Chicago Bears signed him in 2011.

Robert Hughes also played for several other NFL teams. These included the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Washington Redskins, Indianapolis Colts, and Arizona Cardinals.

Robert Hughes's Pro Football Journey

Playing for the Chicago Bears

After the 2011 NFL draft, Robert Hughes was not chosen by any team. However, the Chicago Bears signed him on July 27, 2011. He showed his skills in a preseason game against the Cleveland Browns. In that game, he ran for 69 yards and scored two touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 26 yards. Despite this strong performance, the Bears released him before the 2011 season officially began.

Time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Hughes then signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on April 19, 2012. He played in two preseason games for the Bucs. He had 2 carries for 4 yards and 2 catches for 23 yards. On August 31, the team released him during their final roster cuts. This meant he just missed making the team for the 2012 season.

Short Stint with the Washington Redskins

On September 3, 2012, Hughes joined the practice squad of the Washington Redskins. A practice squad is where teams keep players who can train with them but are not on the main roster. He was with the Redskins for a short time, being released on September 11, 2012.

Playing for the Indianapolis Colts

Hughes signed with the Indianapolis Colts practice squad on October 10, 2012. He was later moved to the main team on October 29, 2012. Robert played in his first official NFL game on November 4, 2012, against the Miami Dolphins. A few days later, on November 8, 2012, he made his first catch. It was a 3-yard reception from quarterback Andrew Luck in a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He also had his first rushing attempt on November 18, 2012, gaining five yards against the New England Patriots. The Colts released him on May 1, 2013, but then signed him again on August 5, 2013.

With the Arizona Cardinals

On December 23, 2013, Hughes signed with the Arizona Cardinals practice squad. He was released by the Cardinals on September 5, 2015. However, he rejoined their practice squad on October 22 of the same year. On January 26, 2016, Hughes signed a "futures contract" with the Cardinals. This type of contract means a player is signed for the next season. He was released by the team on April 15, 2016.

Final Stop with the Cleveland Browns

Hughes was later signed by the Cleveland Browns. His time with the Browns was brief, as he was released on August 29, 2016.
