Robert Hughes' Football Journey
Playing for the Chicago Bears
After college, Robert Hughes hoped to join an NFL team. He wasn't picked in the 2011 NFL draft, but the Chicago Bears signed him on July 27, 2011. This gave him a chance to show his skills.
During the preseason, he played well. In one game against the Cleveland Browns, he ran for 69 yards and scored two touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 26 yards. Even with these good plays, the Bears decided to let him go before the 2011 season officially started.
Time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
On April 19, 2012, Robert signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played in two preseason games for the team. He carried the ball twice for 4 yards and caught two passes for 23 yards.
However, just like with the Bears, he was released by the Buccaneers. This happened on August 31, 2012, right before the 2012 season began. He just barely missed making the team's final roster.
Joining the Washington Redskins
Robert Hughes then signed with the practice squad of the Washington Redskins on September 3, 2012. A practice squad is a group of players who train with the team but aren't on the main roster. They can be called up if needed.
He stayed with the Redskins for a short time. He was released from their practice squad on September 11, 2012.
Playing for the Indianapolis Colts
On October 10, 2012, Robert Hughes joined the Indianapolis Colts practice squad. He worked hard and was moved to the main team on October 29, 2012.
He played his first official NFL game on November 4, 2012, against the Miami Dolphins. A few days later, on November 8, 2012, he made his first official catch. It was a 3-yard reception from quarterback Andrew Luck during a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Later, on November 18, 2012, he had his first official run with the ball. It was a 5-yard rush against the New England Patriots. He was released by the Colts on May 1, 2013, but they signed him again on August 5, 2013.
With the Arizona Cardinals
On December 23, 2013, Robert Hughes signed with the Arizona Cardinals practice squad. He was released by the Cardinals on September 5, 2015.
However, the Cardinals signed him back to their practice squad on October 22, 2015. On January 26, 2016, he signed a "futures contract" with the team. This kind of contract means a player is signed for the next season. He was cut by the Cardinals on April 15, 2016.
Brief Time with the Cleveland Browns
Robert Hughes was later signed by the Cleveland Browns. His time with the Browns was short, as he was waived (released) by the team on August 29, 2016.
