Title Prior of St Andrews

Robert I or Robert of Nostell (died 1160) was an important church leader in the 12th century. He was an Anglo-Norman Augustinian canon from England. Robert became the very first Prior of St Andrews, a significant religious position in Scotland. A Prior was the head of a Priory, which is like a monastery for canons. Canons are priests who live together under a set of rules.

Robert's Journey to Scotland

Robert came to the Kingdom of Scotland from Nostell Priory in England. He led a group of canons from Nostell. Their mission was to set up the new St Andrews Cathedral Priory.

Why Robert Came to St Andrews

Robert was invited to Scotland by Robert, who was the Bishop of St Andrews. The Bishop himself had also been a member of Nostell Priory. This connection helped bring Robert and his canons to Scotland.

When Robert Started His Role

Robert likely began his work at St Andrews around the year 1140. He was definitely in charge by May 14, 1144. He traveled directly from Nostell Priory to St Andrews. He did not stop at Scone Abbey first.

When Did Robert I Die?

There are two different ideas about when Robert I passed away. Walter Bower, who wrote in the 15th century, said Robert died in 1162. Bower also believed Robert led the priory for twenty-two years.

The More Accurate Date

However, an older and more trusted record, the Melrose Chronicle, states a different year. According to this chronicle, Robert actually died in 1160. Historians usually consider the Melrose Chronicle to be more reliable for these early dates.
