Sir Robert Keith (who died in 1346) was an important Scottish nobleman. He held a special job called the Great Marischal of Scotland. This job was "hereditary," meaning it was passed down in his family.

A Life of Service

Early Life and Family Job

Sir Robert Keith was the son of John Keith. His grandfather was Robert II Keith, who was also a Great Marischal of Scotland. His grandfather led the Scottish horse soldiers (cavalry) at the famous Battle of Bannockburn. Robert Keith took over the important role of Great Marischal after his grandfather.

Fighting for Scotland

Robert Keith was a loyal supporter of King David II of Scotland. He fought in the king's wars against Edward Balliol and the English. He also served as the Sheriff of Aberdeen, which meant he was in charge of law and order in that area.

He once fought against Macduff, the Earl of Fife. Macduff had made the city of Perth very strong with defenses. Robert Keith led a siege against Perth, which lasted for three months. In the end, Robert Keith won and took control of Perth. Macduff was then sent to Kildrummy Castle as a prisoner.

The Battle of Neville's Cross

In 1346, King David II of Scotland decided to invade England. Robert Keith was with the king and his army. On October 17, 1346, they fought a big battle called the Battle of Neville's Cross. Sadly, Robert Keith was killed during this battle. After his death, his great-uncle, Sir Edward Keith, became the next Great Marischal of Scotland.

Family

Robert Keith married Margaret, who was the daughter of Gilbert de la Hay. Gilbert de la Hay held the important job of Constable of Scotland. Robert and Margaret had several children:

  • William Keith
  • Edward Keith
  • Margaret Keith, who married Hugh Arbuthnot, the Lord of Arbuthnot.
