Robert Leroy Johnson (May 8, 1911 – August 16, 1938) was an American blues singer, songwriter, and musician. He made famous recordings in 1936 and 1937. These recordings showed his amazing singing, guitar playing, and songwriting skills. His music has inspired many musicians who came after him.
Early life
Robert Johnson was born in Hazlehurst, Mississippi. He was the 11th child of his mother, Julia Major Dodds. His father, Charles Dodds, had left his mother before Robert was born. A field worker named Noah Johnson raised him. This is why Robert chose "Johnson" as his family name.
Music career
Robert started playing the guitar when he was a child. In February 1929, he married Virginia Travis. After this, he became very serious about playing the guitar. Sadly, his wife died in April 1930 at age 16 while giving birth.
After his wife's death, Johnson began traveling around the Delta region. Around 1936, a friend who helped many blues players helped him join other musicians. He became known for his unique style.
Robert Johnson died on August 16, 1938, when he was twenty-seven years old.
