Robert Ker, 2nd Duke of Roxburghe was an important Scottish nobleman. He was born around 1709 and passed away on August 20, 1755.

Who Was Robert Ker?

Robert Ker was the only son of the 1st Duke of Roxburghe. His mother was Lady Mary Finch. She was the daughter of Daniel Finch, 2nd Earl of Nottingham.

Robert's Titles

On May 24, 1722, Robert received special titles. He became the Earl Ker, of Wakefield, and Baron Ker, of Wakefield. These titles were part of the Peerage of Great Britain. This meant he was a very important person in the British nobility.

His Family Life

On June 16, 1739, Robert Ker married Essex Mostyn. She was his half-cousin. Her father was Sir Roger Mostyn, 3rd Baronet. Essex Mostyn's mother was also named Essex Finch. Robert and Essex had five children together:

  • Lord John Ker, who later became the 3rd Duke of Roxburghe
  • Lady Essex Ker (born March 9, 1742), who sadly died as a baby
  • Lady Essex Ker (born March 25, 1744), who was a bridesmaid at Queen Charlotte's wedding in 1761. She never married.
  • Lady Mary Ker (born March 17, 1746), who also never married
  • Lt. Col. Lord Robert Ker (August 27, 1747 – March 20, 1781)

Becoming Duke

Robert Ker inherited his father's title in 1741. This made him the 2nd Duke of Roxburghe. He held this important position until he died in 1755. After his death, his oldest son, John, became the next Duke.
