Robert Marek Korzeniowski (born July 30, 1968) is a famous Polish former racewalker. He is known for winning many gold medals in major sports events.

Robert won four gold medals at the Olympic Games. He also earned three gold medals at the World Championships.

Robert Korzeniowski was born in Lubaczów, a town in Poland. He has a sister, Sylwia Korzeniowska, who is also an Olympic athlete.

Robert Korzeniowski is a true legend in racewalking. He achieved many incredible things during his career.

Olympic Gold Medals

Robert won three Olympic gold medals in a row for the 50-kilometer walk.

At the Sydney 2000 Olympics, he made history. He was the first athlete to win gold in both the 50-kilometer walk and the 20-kilometer walk at the same Olympic Games. This was a very rare and difficult achievement!

World and European Championships

Robert also won several titles at the World Championships in the 50-kilometer walk:

  • He won in 1997 in Athens.
  • He won in 2001 in Edmonton.
  • He won in 2003 in Paris.

He also became a European Champion twice in the 50-kilometer walk. He won in 1998 in Budapest and again in 2002 in Munich.

For a few years, from 2002 to 2006, Robert held the world record for the 50-kilometer walk.

Life After Sports

After the 2004 Olympic Games, Robert Korzeniowski decided to retire from competing. He then started working with the International Olympic Committee.

He also coached and guided other athletes, including Paquillo Fernández, who later became a world record-holder himself.

From 2005, Robert worked for the public Polish Television (TVP). He was in charge of the sports department. In 2007, he became the General Manager of TVP Sport, a new sports TV channel in Poland. He left this role in 2009.

In 2014, Robert Korzeniowski was honored by being added to the International Association of Athletics Federations' Hall of Fame. This is a special place for the greatest athletes in track and field history.

In 2022, a new racewalking competition was started in Warsaw, Poland. It is called the Korzeniowski Warsaw Race Walking Cup, named after him! This event is now a major competition on the World Athletics Race Walking Tour.

Special Awards and Honors

For his amazing achievements in sports, Robert Korzeniowski received the Order of Polonia Restituta, which is a high honor in Poland:

  • 2000 Officer's Cross Officer's Cross (4th Class)
  • 2004 Commander's Cross Commander's Cross (3rd Class)
