Robert Louis Freeman Sr. (April 27, 1934 – May 16, 2016) was an American politician. He served as the 47th Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana from 1980 to 1988. He worked with Governors Dave Treen and Edwin Edwards. A Lieutenant Governor is a state official who is second in command to the governor. They often step in when the governor is away or unable to serve.
Early Life and Education
Robert Freeman was born in Plaquemine, Louisiana. He attended Louisiana State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree. Later, he studied law at Loyola University New Orleans, finishing in 1965. Before his political career, he served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1959.
Political Career
After becoming a lawyer, Freeman worked for a chemical company for a short time. He then started his own law firm. His public service began when he was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives. He served there from 1968 to 1980. In this role, he was known for supporting workers' rights.
In 1979, Robert Freeman was elected Lieutenant Governor. He served two terms in this important state position. During his time as Lieutenant Governor, he worked with two different governors. He passed away on May 16, 2016, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
