Robert Lucas: A Life of Service

Constable of the Tower

Because of his support for King William III, Robert Lucas was given a very important job: the Constable of the Tower of London. Imagine being in charge of one of the most famous castles in England! The House of Lords, a powerful part of the English government, chose him for this role. The King later agreed with their choice.

Military Career

Robert Lucas was also a dedicated soldier. He fought in King William's army during the Nine Years' War. This war took place in a region called Flanders, which is now part of Belgium. During his time in the army, he rose through the ranks. He became a lieutenant-colonel in a group of soldiers known as Jacob's Regiment of Foot. A lieutenant-colonel is a high-ranking officer, just below a colonel.

When Queen Anne became the new ruler, Robert Lucas was replaced as Constable of the Tower. However, he was still given a new and important role. He became a colonel and was put in charge of a brand new group of soldiers, the 34th (Cumberland) Regiment of Foot. Being a colonel meant he was the main leader of his own regiment.

His Legacy

Robert Lucas passed away on January 31, 1705. When he died, his special title, the "Barony of Lucas," ended because he had no children to pass it on to.

A famous writer named Richard Steele was a captain in Robert Lucas's regiment. Richard Steele wrote a special message praising Robert Lucas's good character. This shows that he was respected by those who served with him.
