Robert Milton Young (born November 22, 1924 – died February 6, 2024) was an American filmmaker. He was a director, cinematographer, screenwriter, and producer. He made many movies and TV shows.

Robert Young often worked with actor Edward James Olmos. He directed Olmos in films like Alambrista! (1977) and The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez (1982). He also helped produce Olmos's first movie as a director, American Me (1992). Robert Young passed away in Los Angeles when he was 99 years old.

Robert Young's Early Life and School

Robert Milton Young was born in New York City on November 22, 1924. His dad was a cameraman. He later owned a lab where films were processed.

Robert first went to college at MIT. He studied to become a chemical engineer. After two years, he joined the U.S. Navy. He served during World War II in places like New Guinea and the Philippines.

After the war, he came back to America. He decided to study English literature at Harvard University. He also became very interested in making films. Robert Young graduated from Harvard in 1949.

After college, Robert Young started a group with two friends. They made educational films together. In 1960, he began working for NBC. He made public affairs programs for a show called NBC White Paper.

One important film he made for NBC was Sit-In. He traveled to the American South to film it in 1960. The film showed civil rights protests. It won a special award called a Peabody Award. Later, Young left NBC to make more story-based movies.
