Robert Mangot followed in his father's footsteps. His father, Pierre Mangot, was also a skilled goldsmith who worked for King Francis I of France. Robert Mangot lived and worked in the busy city of Paris, France.
Working for Royalty
Robert Mangot was an important person in the royal court. He was even present as a royal goldsmith at the funeral of King Henry II of France. Later, in 1577, he was officially listed as a goldsmith in the household of King Charles IX. This shows how trusted and valued his work was by the kings of France.
Special Gems and Jewels
In 1551, Robert Mangot created a very special piece. He supplied a beautiful green gem with red spots. This gem is called a heliotrope, and it had a figure of an Indian carved into it. Imagine how detailed and intricate his work must have been!
Creating for Mary, Queen of Scots
Robert Mangot also made many items for the royal children. In 1551, he worked on jewels for the young Mary, Queen of Scots. She was a princess at the time, and her jewels often needed fixing or redesigning. Robert Mangot was one of the top jewelers in Paris who helped her.
He made special gold beads called "paternoster beads" and "gerbes" for her rosaries. A rosary is a string of beads used for prayer. He also crafted a fancy belt, called a "girdle," and a long chain that hung down, both made in a popular Spanish style.
One of his biggest tasks for Mary was supplying 1,500 gold buttons! These tiny, sparkling buttons were used to decorate silver embroidery on a beautiful black velvet dress. It must have been a truly stunning outfit!
