Sir Robert Montgomery was an important British leader in India. He was born on December 2, 1809, in Moville, Ireland, and passed away on December 28, 1887. He worked as a civil servant, which means he helped manage the government in India when it was under British rule.
Early Life and Career
Robert Montgomery was born at a place called New Park in Moville. He went to several schools, including Foyle College in Londonderry, and Wraxall Hall School in Wiltshire. From 1823 to 1825, he studied at the Addiscombe Military Seminary in Croydon, Surrey. This school trained people for jobs in the British East India Company.
In 1827, Robert joined the Indian Civil Service. This was a group of British officials who helped run India. He got married in India and started a family there. His second son, Henry, later became the father of Field Marshal Montgomery, a famous military leader. After Robert's death, Henry inherited the family home in Ireland.
