Sir Robert More (born May 21, 1581 – died February 1626) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is a part of the English Parliament, starting from 1601.

Early Life and Education

Sir Robert More was the oldest son of Sir George More of Loseley and his first wife, Anne Poynings. Anne was the daughter of Sir Adrian Poynings.

Robert More started studying at Corpus Christi College, Oxford in 1595. He earned his first degree there in 1598. In 1600, he joined the Inner Temple, which was a famous school for training lawyers. Around the same time, he also started helping his father manage Farnham Little Park.

Political Career and Public Service

In 1601, Robert More was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for the town of Guildford. An MP is someone elected to represent their area in Parliament and help make laws.

He was given the title of "Sir" (knighted) sometime between 1601 and 1604. From about 1603 to 1608, he worked with his father as a joint constable of Farnham Castle. A constable was like a manager or keeper of the castle. He also likely served King James I in a special role early in the king's rule.

In 1604, he was elected as an MP again, this time for the larger area of Surrey. During the time of King James I, he also served as a Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Surrey. A J.P. was a local official who helped keep order and deal with minor legal matters.

Robert More continued his political work:

  • In 1614, he was elected MP for Guildford again.
  • By 1619, he became a Deputy Lieutenant for Surrey. This role involved helping the main county official with military and public duties.
  • In 1621, he was re-elected as MP for Guildford.
  • In 1624, he was elected MP for Surrey once more.
  • In 1625, he was elected MP for Guildford for the last time.

Family and Later Life

Sir Robert More married Frances Lennard. Her parents were Sampson Lennard and Margaret Fiennes, 11th Baroness Dacre. Robert and Frances had a large family with six sons and five daughters.

Sir Robert More passed away in February 1626, when he was 44 years old. His father, Sir George More, lived longer than him. Robert was buried in the Loseley chapel, which is part of St Nicholas’s church in Guildford.
