Robert Gruntal Nathan (born January 2, 1894 – died May 25, 1985) was a famous American writer. He wrote many novels and poems. Some of his most well-known books include The Bishop's Wife and Portrait of Jennie. Both of these books were later made into popular movies.

Robert Nathan's Life Story
Robert Nathan was born in New York City in 1894. He came from a well-known family. He went to school in the United States and Switzerland. Later, he studied at Harvard University for a few years, starting in 1912.
Becoming a Writer
While at Harvard, Robert Nathan began writing short stories and poems. He decided to leave college early to work at an advertising company. This helped him support his family. In 1919, he wrote his first novel, called Peter Kindred.
During the 1920s, Robert Nathan became more successful. He wrote seven more novels. One of these was The Bishop's Wife (1928). This book was later turned into a very popular movie in 1947. It starred famous actors like Cary Grant and Loretta Young.
Later Success and Family
Robert Nathan continued to write many successful books and poems in the 1930s. In 1940, he wrote his most famous book, Portrait of Jennie. This story is about an artist during the Great Depression. He paints a woman who seems to be traveling through time. Portrait of Jennie is considered a classic fantasy story. It was also made into a movie in 1948, starring Jennifer Jones and Joseph Cotten.
In 1956, Robert Nathan wrote and narrated a radio show called "A Pride of Carrots, or Venus Well-Served."
Robert Nathan was married several times. His seventh wife was the British actress Anna Lee. They were married from 1970 until his death in 1985. He had many talented relatives. His aunts included the activist Maud Nathan and the author Annie Nathan Meyer. The poet Emma Lazarus and Supreme Court Justice Benjamin Cardozo were his cousins.
