Robert William Ray was born on April 4, 1960. He is an American lawyer who has worked on many important cases. From 1999 to 2002, he was the head of the Office of the Independent Counsel. This means he was a special lawyer who investigated big cases for the government. He took over from Ken Starr.
During his time as Independent Counsel, he finished investigations into several important government matters. Before this, he was a Deputy Independent Counsel, helping to investigate a former Secretary of Agriculture. He also worked as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, which means he was a lawyer for the U.S. government in New York.
Robert Ray's Education
Robert Ray went to Princeton University and earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, in 1982. Later, he studied law at the Washington and Lee University School of Law. He earned his law degree, called a Juris Doctor, in 1985. He graduated with honors, which is called cum laude.
Robert Ray's Career
After finishing law school, Robert Ray worked for a judge named Frank Altimari. He was a clerk, which means he helped the judge with legal research and preparing for cases.
Later, he worked with a special lawyer named Donald Smaltz. Robert Ray helped to prosecute, or bring legal charges against, Mike Espy. After that, he worked with Ken Starr, another special lawyer.
In 2020, Robert Ray was part of the legal team for former President Donald Trump. He helped the president with legal matters during that time.
