Early Life and High School Basketball
Robert Sacre was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in the United States. His dad, Greg LaFleur, was a football player. His mom, Leslie Sacre, played college basketball. When Robert was seven, his Canadian mom moved them back to Canada. She raised him in North Vancouver, British Columbia. Robert grew very tall, reaching 6 feet 8 inches by the eighth grade! His mom didn't push him to play basketball, but she did want him to learn to swim.
Robert became one of the best high school basketball players in Canada. In his junior year, he led his team, Handsworth Secondary School, to win the British Columbia Provincial Championship. He was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the championship game. In that game, he scored 17 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and blocked four shots. He also played for the Canadian Junior National team in international games. In his final year of high school, he averaged 25 points, 12 rebounds, and four and a half blocks per game. Experts thought he was one of the top basketball recruits in the nation.
College Career at Gonzaga
Robert Sacre decided to play college basketball at Gonzaga University. He joined the NCAA Division I team, the Gonzaga Bulldogs, in 2007. In his first year, he played as a substitute. In his second year, he broke his foot early in the season. Because of this, he was given a "medical redshirt." This meant he could get an extra year to play college basketball later.
Robert came back strong for the 2009–10 season. He became the starting center for the Bulldogs. He averaged 10.3 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game. By the time he finished his college career in 2012, Robert had scored 1,270 points. He also had 679 rebounds and 186 blocks.
Playing in the NBA
Joining the Los Angeles Lakers
On June 28, 2012, the Los Angeles Lakers picked Robert Sacre in the NBA draft. He was the 60th and last player chosen that year! After playing for the Lakers in the Summer League, he officially signed with the team. He made his NBA debut on October 31, 2012. He scored his first NBA points a few days later, on November 4, 2012.
On January 8, 2013, Robert started his first NBA game. He scored 10 points and blocked four shots. During his first year, he also played some games for the Los Angeles D-Fenders. This team was part of the NBA Development League, which helps players get more experience.
In 2013, Robert signed a new three-year deal with the Lakers. On February 5, 2014, he was part of a very unusual game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Lakers had many injured players. Robert committed his sixth foul, which usually means a player must leave the game. But because the Lakers had so few healthy players left, Robert was allowed to stay in the game! This is a rare rule that only happens when a team runs out of players.
Robert left the Lakers in 2016. He briefly signed with the New Orleans Pelicans but was later released before the season started.
Playing in Japan
Sun Rockers Shibuya
On January 7, 2017, Robert Sacre moved to Japan to play basketball. He signed with the Hitachi SunRockers Tokyo-Shibuya team in the Japanese B.League. He played for them for three seasons, until 2019.
After Playing Basketball
Becoming an Executive
After his playing career, Robert Sacre moved into a management role. On March 11, 2021, he became the assistant general manager for the Fraser Valley Bandits. This team is now known as the Vancouver Bandits and plays in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL).
Playing for Canada
Robert Sacre played for the Canadian junior national team in several tournaments. He helped the Canadian team finish fourth in the 2006 FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship. He later joined the senior Canadian national team. He played for them in the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey and the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship in Mexico.
