Robert Shatterell was born in London on November 10, 1616. He started acting when he was quite young. In those days, young boys often played female roles on stage because women were not allowed to act. Robert was part of a group called Beeston's Boys in 1639.
Acting During the Civil War
A big war, called the English Civil War, began in England in 1642. This war lasted for many years. During this time, all theatres were closed. Many actors, including Robert, joined the army. Robert Shatterell became an officer in a special cavalry group led by Prince Rupert. He might have even fought in important battles like Naseby and Marston Moor.
Returning to the Stage
After the main part of the Civil War ended, Robert Shatterell went back to acting. For a while, he acted in other countries like The Hague and Paris.
When theatres finally reopened in England in 1660, Robert was one of the first actors to join a new group called the King's Company. This was a very important acting company.
