Robert Shute (who passed away in April 1590) was an important English judge and politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like today's Parliament, from 1571 to 1581.

Early Life and Education

Robert Shute was born in a place called Gargrave, located in Yorkshire, England. His father was Christopher Shute.

Robert went to Peterhouse, Cambridge, one of the colleges at the famous University of Cambridge, around 1542 or 1544. Later, in 1550, he joined Gray's Inn. This was a special place where people studied to become lawyers. He officially became a lawyer in 1552.

Legal and Political Career

Robert Shute had a long and successful career in law and politics.

Serving Cambridge

From 1558 until he died in 1590, Robert Shute held an important job as the Recorder of Cambridge. A Recorder was a legal officer who advised the city and helped with legal matters.

Member of Parliament

In 1571, Robert Shute was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Cambridge. This meant he represented the people of Cambridge in the House of Commons. He was re-elected as an MP for Cambridge in 1572, continuing his work in government.

Becoming a Judge

Robert Shute also became a high-ranking judge. In 1577, he became a Serjeant-at-law, which was a very respected position for a lawyer. Later, from 1579 to 1586, he served as a Baron of the Exchequer. This was a judge in a court that dealt with money matters for the government. In 1586, he became a Justice of the Queen's Bench, a judge in one of the highest courts in England at the time.

Family Life

Robert Shute married a woman named Thomasine Burgoyne. Her family was from Longstanton, Cambridgeshire.

Robert and Thomasine had children:

  • Their son, also named Robert, later became an MP for St Albans.
  • Their daughter, Jane, married John Hatton. They had several children, including Sir Thomas Hatton, 1st Baronet and Sir Robert Hatton, who was a politician during the time of the Royalists.
