Robert Tracy (1655–1735) was an important English judge. He served in courts in both Ireland and England. He was known for his long and respected career in law.

Early Life

Robert Tracy was born in 1655. His birthplace was Toddington in Gloucestershire, England. He was the fifth son of Robert Tracy, who was a Viscount. His mother was Dorothy Cocks. His grandparents were John Tracy and Anne Shirley.

A Career in Law

Robert Tracy began his studies at Oriel College, Oxford, in 1672. The next year, he joined the Middle Temple. This was a place where people studied to become lawyers.

In 1680, he officially became a lawyer. This is called being called to the bar. In 1692, he tried to become a Member of Parliament for Tewkesbury. However, he did not win the election.

Tracy became a judge in Ireland in 1699. He worked for the King's Bench. This court handled important legal cases. In 1700, he moved to England. He became a judge called a baron of the Exchequer. This role involved dealing with government money matters.

Later, in 1702, he moved to the Court of Common Pleas. This court handled disagreements between people. He also helped lead the country for short times. This happened when the main judge, called the lord-chancellor, was not available. He was a commissioner of the Great Seal during these times.

Robert Tracy was involved in some big trials. He helped decide cases for people called Jacobites in 1716. These were people who supported the old royal family.

In 1726, he decided to retire from being a judge. He received a yearly payment of £1,500. He passed away on September 11, 1735. He was buried in the church near his home in Didbrook, Gloucestershire.

Family Life

On August 29, 1683, Robert Tracy married Anne Dowdeswell. She was the daughter of William Dowdeswell. Robert and Anne had five children. They had three sons named Robert, Richard, and William. They also had two daughters named Anne and Dorothy. Their daughter Dorothy later married John Pratt. He was the son of another important judge, Sir John Pratt.
