Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Robert Wroth (who died in 1614) was an important person in the English royal court. He also served as a Member of Parliament for Newtown. This meant he helped make laws for the country.

Early Life and Family

Robert Wroth was the son of another Robert Wroth, who passed away in 1606. His mother was Susan Stonard, whose family came from Loughton in Essex.

In May 1603, Robert Wroth was made a knight by King James at Syon House. This was a special honor given by the King.

On September 27, 1604, he married Mary Sidney at Penshurst. Mary Sidney was a famous poet. Her parents were Robert Sidney, 1st Earl of Leicester and Barbara Gamage.

Royal Visitors

Robert Wroth had connections with the royal family. Prince Henry, who was the King's son, visited Robert Wroth's father in May 1605. Prince Henry stayed for three days.

King James himself also visited Loughton in July 1605. Prince Henry came back to visit again in July 1606.

Building Loughton Hall

In March 1608, Robert Wroth bought a large estate, called a manor, in Essex. He bought it from William Cornwallis.

Robert Wroth was a tenant of the King at the manor of Loughton. In 1608, he said that the buildings there were very old and small. He thought they were not good enough to host the King if he wanted to hunt in Waltham Forest.

Robert Wroth wanted to buy the house and rebuild it. His wife, Mary Wroth, even wrote to Anne of Denmark, the Queen, to ask for her help. She told the Queen that the old house was "in decay" and might fall down. She said a new house could host both the King and Queen. She also mentioned that her husband worked hard to protect the deer for the King's hunting trips.

The house was rebuilt and finished by June 1612. It is thought that buying and fixing up Loughton Hall might have caused Robert Wroth to have many debts. He also helped with royal building projects, like making Theobalds bigger.

Friends and Legacy

Robert Wroth was friends with the famous writer Ben Jonson. Ben Jonson wrote a poem about Loughton and praised Robert Wroth as a great host. This poem is in a collection called The Forest.

Another writer, William Gamage, also wrote a short poem praising Robert Wroth. He liked how Robert Wroth managed his other property, Durants, in Enfield.

Later Life

Robert Wroth died in 1614 from an infection called gangrene.

His young son, who was supposed to inherit everything, sadly died in July 1616. Because of this, Robert Wroth's property and wealth went to his uncle, John Wroth.
