The Robert and Julia Darling House is a special old building in Simsbury, Connecticut. Today, it's called the Cannon Building. It was built in 1927 and is a great example of a building style called Colonial Revival. This house is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. Now, instead of a home, it has offices inside.
About the Darling House
The Robert and Julia Darling House is located in the center of Simsbury. It stands on the east side of Hopmeadow Street, which is a main road. The building is a large, two-story structure made of brick. It has a special kind of roof called a hip roof.
The house shows off the Colonial Revival style. This means it looks like older American colonial homes. It has fancy entrances on different sides. Even though it's now used for offices, much of the original wood inside is still there.
Who Were Robert and Julia Darling?
The house was built in 1927 for Robert Darling and his wife, Julia. Robert Darling was a very important person in the area. He was the chairman of a company called Ensign-Bickford Company. Julia Darling was also special because her grandfather started that company.
Both Robert and Julia Darling were known for helping their community. They were involved in many local groups. They also supported different charities. Their original property was quite large, about 35 acres.
From Home to Offices
Robert Darling passed away in 1957. After that, his son sold the house. The building was then changed to hold medical offices. Today, it is still used for various professional offices.
