Robert fitzRoger (born 1247, died 1310) was an important English nobleman, also known as a baron. He was the Lord of several places like Warkworth, Clavering, and Eure. Robert was the son of Roger FitzJohn and Isabel de Dunbar. He was a brave soldier who fought in many wars in Wales, France (Gascony), and Scotland.
Robert's Early Life
Robert fitzRoger's father, Roger fitzJohn, owned Warkworth Castle. He was also the lord of Warkworth, Clavering, and Eure. Robert's father passed away in 1249 when Robert was still a baby.
Because Robert was so young, he was placed under the care of William de Valence. This care arrangement was called a guardianship. Robert's grandmother, Ada de Baillol, even tried to buy the right to care for her grandson. Robert also gained control of the Blythburgh area in Suffolk through his mother's family.
A Life of War and Service
Robert fitzRoger was a very skilled soldier. He took part in several wars in Wales in 1277, 1282, and 1283. He also fought in Gascony, a region in France, in 1294.
From 1291 to 1309, Robert was involved in wars against Scotland. In 1295, he was called to join the English Parliament as Lord FitzRoger. This meant he was an important advisor to the king.
Key Battles and Events
During the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297, Robert fitzRoger was captured by the enemy. After this, he became a joint Captain of the Scotch Marches in November 1297. This role meant he helped guard the border between England and Scotland.
Robert fought alongside his son, John, at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298. He also took part in the siege of Caerlaverock Castle in 1300. A siege is when an army surrounds a castle to try and capture it.
In 1301, Robert fitzRoger signed the Barons' Letter of 1301. This was a letter from many important noblemen to the Pope. In 1302, he led a raid with John de Segrave from Berwick. He fought his last major battle at Methven in 1306. Robert fitzRoger passed away in 1310.

Robert fitzRoger married Margaret de la Zouch. She was the daughter of Alan de la Zouche and Ellen de Quincy.
Robert and Margaret had several children. Their most well-known child was John de Clavering (who died in 1332). John later married Hawise de Tybetot and had his own family.
