Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Robert of Aumale was an important person who lived around the year 1086. He was also known by names like d'Amarell or Damarell. Robert was one of the main landowners in Devon, England, who held his land directly from King William the Conqueror. King William ruled England from 1066 to 1087.

Robert's lands were listed in a very important book called the Domesday Book. This book was like a big survey of all the land in England, made in 1086. It helped King William know who owned what and how much tax they should pay. Robert's lands included 17 different places. Later, these lands became part of a very large area known as the Feudal barony of Plympton. Powerful families, like the Courtenay family, who were also called the Earls of Devon, later controlled this barony.

Where Did Robert Come From?

Robert of Aumale came from a place called Aumale in Normandy. Normandy is a region in France. Today, Aumale is part of an area called Seine-Maritime. Robert was the "lord" of Aumale, which means he was the main owner and ruler of that estate or area.

Robert's Family and Descendants

Over time, different parts of the Damarell family branched out. They started new family lines in other places. Some of these places included Milton Damarell, a place called Damarell in the area of North Huish, Woodbury, and Aveton Giffard. These families carried on the Damarell name in different parts of England.
