Robert of Chester facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Robert of Chester was an English scholar from the 1100s. He was known as an Arabist, meaning he studied the Arabic language and culture. Robert translated many important books from Arabic into Latin, which was the main language for learning in Europe at that time.

These translations helped bring new knowledge from the Arab world to Europe.

Robert's Important Translations

Robert of Chester translated two very famous books. These books introduced new ideas to European scholars.

The First Alchemy Book

In 1144, Robert translated a book called Book on the Composition of Alchemy (in Latin, Liber de compositione alchemiae). This was the very first book about alchemy to be available in Europe. Alchemy was an early form of chemistry. People who studied alchemy tried to turn ordinary metals into gold. They also searched for a way to live forever.

The Algebra Book

A year later, in 1145, Robert translated another key book. It was called Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing. This book was written by a famous Arab mathematician named al-Khwārizmī. It was all about algebra, which is a branch of mathematics that uses letters and symbols to solve problems. Robert's translation helped bring algebra to Europe.

Where Robert Worked

During the 1140s, Robert worked in Spain. At that time, Spain was divided between Muslim and Christian rulers. This created a unique environment where different cultures could share ideas. It was a great place for translators like Robert to work. He is known to have worked in a city called Segovia.

However, by the end of the 1140s, Robert had returned to England.

Was He Robert of Ketton?

Some people think that Robert of Chester might be the same person as Robert of Ketton. Robert of Ketton was also an English translator working from Arabic to Latin in the 1140s.

But there are reasons to think they were different people. Ketton and Chester are both places in England, but they are far apart. Also, Robert of Ketton worked in the Kingdom of Navarre in Spain, while Robert of Chester worked in Segovia. This suggests they were two different scholars.
