About Assis
Roberto de Assis Moreira was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, on January 10, 1971. His mother, Miguelina de Assis, worked as a cosmetics saleswoman and later became a nurse. His father, João Moreira, was a ship welder and used to play football professionally for Cruzeiro-RS.
Assis grew up in a simple home in Porto Alegre. Football was a big part of his family life. His father worked for Gremio on game days, and his uncles also played. Assis was a big inspiration for his younger brother, Ronaldinho, who is nine years younger. Assis's talent helped him join Gremio's youth team and start a great sports career.
When Assis signed his first professional contract, Gremio helped his family move to a new house with a swimming pool. Sadly, his father passed away in 1989. Assis, who was 18 at the time, had to take on a big role in his family. He managed his own career and later helped manage his brother's career too. His mother later passed away in 2012.
Assis's Football Journey
Assis showed great potential at age 16 while playing for Gremio's youth team. Other teams, like Torino, were very interested in him. Gremio quickly signed Assis to a professional contract, offering his family a new house.
Assis quickly became well-known at Gremio. He helped his team win three state titles in a row from 1988 to 1990. In 1991, he faced a challenge when he suffered a serious knee injury, which kept him from playing for eight months.
In 1992, Gremio sold Assis to the Swiss team FC Sion. He played there until 1995 and helped them win their first Swiss Cup in 1995. After that, he was loaned to several teams, including Sporting CP, where he helped win the Portuguese Super Cup in 1995. He returned to Sion in 1996 and stayed through the 1997 season. During this time, he helped his team win another cup and become Swiss Champions.
After his time in Switzerland, Assis played for teams in Portugal, Japan, Mexico, and Brazil. He finished his football career with Montpellier HSC in France.
Manager and Agent Role
Assis's younger brother, Ronaldo, who became known as Ronaldinho, also showed amazing talent at Gremio's youth team. Because Assis had experience as a player and negotiator, and had taken on a guiding role for his brother, he became Ronaldinho's manager throughout his career.
Assis stayed in close contact with his brother while Ronaldinho played in Brazil. Gremio received many offers for Ronaldinho, but Assis eventually negotiated a big transfer for Ronaldinho to Paris Saint-Germain. Assis became known as a very skilled negotiator. He managed all of his brother's business and helped with sponsor deals, including the important Nike deal for the Nike Tiempo shoe line.
Other Business Ventures
Besides managing his brother Ronaldinho, Assis also helped other players through his company, the Assis Moreira Group. He also owns the Brazilian football club Porto Alegre, which plays in the Campeonato Gaúcho.
Family Life
His Bond with Ronaldinho
Today, Assis continues to be his brother's agent and adviser. Many people, including Ronaldinho himself, say that Assis has been a huge influence and guide for him. Ronaldinho has even called his brother his "idol." In January 2020, Ronaldinho described Assis as a "brother, father, partner, [and] footballer."
When Ronaldinho received the FIFA World Player of the Year award for the second time in December 2005, he thanked his brother. He said, "He's my idol. He's been through a lot and has helped me every step of the way. He has encouraged me never to stop trying."
Assis's Son
Assis has a son named Diego Assis, who also tried to become a professional football player like his father and uncle. Diego joined Flamengo's youth team when Ronaldinho was playing there. He later played for Cruzeiro-RS for a short time in 2014, just like Assis's father had done.
