Robin McMaugh Klein (born 28 February 1936) is a well-known Australian author. She writes many exciting books for children and young adults. Robin Klein was born in Kempsey, New South Wales, Australia. She now lives near Melbourne.
Early Life and First Stories
Robin Klein grew up in a big family with eight brothers and sisters. She loved writing from a young age. Her very first short story was published when she was just 16 years old!
Before becoming a full-time writer, Robin had many different jobs. She worked as a tea lady, a bookshop assistant, and even a nurse. She also helped children at a special school. In 1981, she received a special grant for her writing. Since then, she has published more than 20 books. She also wrote the famous poem "Amanda!". Robin Klein went to Newcastle Girls' High School.
Amazing Books and Awards
Many of Robin Klein's books have been recognized with awards. Several were chosen as finalists for the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Australian Children's Book of the Year Award.
Her popular book, Hating Alison Ashley, was even made into a movie. Another book, Halfway Across the Galaxy and Turn Left, became a television series in 1992.
Robin Klein's novel, Came Back to Show You I Could Fly, won a human rights award for literature in 1989. It also won the 1990 CBCA Children's Book of the Year Award: Older Readers. This book was later made into a film called Say a Little Prayer in 1993.
Other books by Robin Klein have also received awards in Australia. For example, The Listmaker won the South Australian Festival Award for Literature in 1998. Her book Boss of the Pool also won awards or was a finalist.
Since 2005, Robin Klein has been living in a nursing home due to a serious health issue. Because of this, she is no longer able to write new books or do much public work for her stories.
