History of Robles del Rio
How Robles del Rio Started
A man named Frank B. Porter created the town of Robles del Rio in 1927. He bought a large piece of land, about 678 acres, from the Del Monte Properties Company. This land was part of a much bigger area called Rancho Los Laureles. They chose the name Robles del Rio because of the many oak trees near the river.
The Robles del Rio Lodge
In 1932, Frank Porter built the Robles del Rio Lodge. This lodge was quite big, with 32 guest rooms for visitors. It also had places to eat, a swimming pool, a spa, and tennis courts. There were even stables for horses. In 1939, Porter sold the lodge to David Prince and William "Bill" Woods.
In May 2010, the Robles del Rio Lodge sadly burned down. It had been empty for several years before the fire. The cause of the fire could not be found. A family bought the property in 2012.
Water for the Community
Frank Porter also started the Robles del Rio Carmelo Water Company in 1932. This company was created to make sure all the residents had water. Later, in 1941, he gave 21 acres of meadow land to the Water Company. This land used to be a golf course.
Life During the Great Depression
During the Great Depression in the United States, times were tough for everyone. In Robles del Rio, land and building lots were sold at a big discount. Some residential lots were sold for as little as $90.
The Robles del Rio Post Office
In 1941, Frank Porter opened the Robles del Rio Post Office. This post office later became a well-known local shop called Rosie's Cracker Barrel. It had 150 mailboxes for the community. However, in 1952, the mail service moved to the Carmel Valley Village Post Office.
