How Roblox Started

Roblox Corporation was founded by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel. Before Roblox, David Baszucki had another company called Knowledge Revolution, which made educational software. In 1989, this company created a program called Interactive Physics, which simulated how things move. They also made Working Model, a software that simulated mechanical devices.

In 1998, MSC Software bought Knowledge Revolution. Both Baszucki and Cassel worked there in important roles. Baszucki later left to start his own investment firm. In 2004, he and Cassel founded Roblox Corporation. They began working on a video game called DynaBlocks. The game was released in a test version that same year. In 2005, the game's name changed to Roblox. It was officially launched on September 1, 2006. Sadly, Erik Cassel passed away in 2013.

Growing the Roblox World

Roblox Corporation grew quickly. In 2013, the company had 68 employees. By 2016, this number had grown to 163. In 2017, Roblox received a large investment of US$82 million to help it grow even more.

Expanding Globally

To reach players around the world, Roblox Corporation created Roblox International in 2018. They hired Chris Misner to lead this effort. Under his guidance, Roblox became available in Chinese, German, and French in 2019. This helped many more kids and teens enjoy the platform.

Improving Technology

Roblox also focused on making its technology better. In 2018, they hired Dan Williams to move Roblox from using other companies' internet services to using its own. This helped Roblox run more smoothly. The company also bought PacketZoom, a company that made software to improve mobile internet connections. In 2020, Roblox acquired Loom.ai, a company that creates 3D avatars from photos. In 2021, they bought Bash Video and Guilded, which are online communication platforms.

Roblox Becomes a Public Company

In 2020, Roblox Corporation started planning to become a public company. This means its shares could be bought and sold by anyone on a stock exchange. They chose a method called a "direct listing" to offer their shares. In February 2021, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) approved Roblox Corporation's shares for trading. On March 10, 2021, Roblox shares began trading, and the company was valued at about US$41.9 billion.

New Ways to Play and Create

In 2023, Roblox Corporation launched a "Roblox Partner Program." This program helps developers work with brands to create special Roblox experiences for advertising. Also in 2023, Roblox announced plans for an in-game career center. This center would allow players to attend events, listen to podcasts, and talk with real employees about different jobs.

Important Events and Agreements

Protecting Trademarks

In 2016, a company called Cinemark Theatres filed a lawsuit against Roblox Corporation. They were concerned because some user-created games on Roblox looked very similar to their movie theater locations and used their brand name. Roblox worked to address these concerns.

Ensuring Fair Play and Purchases

In 2021, some users raised concerns about items they bought in the game that were later removed. Roblox Corporation explained that they review all content submitted by developers. Sometimes items are removed if they don't meet the platform's rules. To resolve this, Roblox agreed to offer Robux refunds to users who had bought these items before May 2023.
