Roboshark facts for kids
Roboshark is a special robot shark. It was built by a person named Andrew Sneath in 2003. This amazing robot was used to film real sharks underwater!
What is Roboshark?
Roboshark is a robot designed to look like a real shark. It has a camera attached to it. This camera helped filmmakers get very close to wild sharks without disturbing them.
Filming Real Sharks
Roboshark was featured in a TV show called "Smart Sharks: Swimming with Roboshark." This show was part of the BBC Natural History Unit's Wildlife Special series. The robot shark helped capture amazing underwater videos of different types of sharks, including:
- Whale sharks (the biggest fish in the ocean!)
- Bull sharks
- Great white sharks
The footage helped people learn more about how these sharks live and behave in their natural homes.
Roboshark's New Home
After its time filming for TV, Roboshark "retired." It now lives in a special robot aquarium at the National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth, England. Andrew Sneath, who built Roboshark, also created this aquarium.
Visitors can go inside a small sub and travel into the tank. This lets them see Roboshark up close, just like it's swimming in the ocean!
A Business Idea
Andrew Sneath once appeared on a TV show called Dragons' Den. On this show, people present their business ideas to wealthy investors, hoping to get money to make their ideas happen. Andrew wanted money to build a new tank for Roboshark on land. This new tank would have been a stage for Roboshark. However, the investors on the show decided not to invest in his idea.
