Robyne Robinson (born in 1961 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American television journalist. She is also an entrepreneur, which means she starts and runs her own businesses. In 2010, she ran for Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota. This is a high-ranking position in state government.

Early Life and Career

Robyne L. Robinson was born in Chicago, Illinois. She was the younger of two daughters. Her parents were both schoolteachers. Robyne went to local schools and finished high school at Morgan Park Academy in 1979.

Robyne started her career in news at WNDU-TV in South Bend, Indiana. She then worked as a reporter covering military news for WVEC-TV in Hampton-Norfolk, Virginia. Later, she worked at WFAA-TV in Dallas. There, she reported on local politics, education, and community issues. While working at WMAR-TV in Baltimore, she won an award for reporting on politics in Washington, D.C.

For 20 years, Robyne was a reporter and then a news anchor at KMSP in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota. She joined KMSP-TV in 1990.

Transition to Politics

On May 11, 2010, Robyne Robinson announced she would leave KMSP. Her last day as a broadcaster was May 26, 2010. The very next day, May 27, 2010, it was announced that Robyne would join Matt Entenza. He was a candidate for governor in Minnesota. She would be his "running mate," meaning she would run for Lieutenant Governor alongside him. Before this, she had never run for a public office.

Awards and Recognition

Robyne Robinson has received several awards for her work:

  • Hubert H. Humphrey Public Policy Fellow at the University of Minnesota
  • Upper Midwest Emmy for Best Anchor in 2005
  • Edward R. Murrow Award
  • St. Paul Companies' Pan-African Council Legacy Award
  • Media Allies Award from the Minnesota Council of Non-Profits
  • Minneapolis NAACP Television Industry Award

Running for Lieutenant Governor

On May 24, 2010, Robyne Robinson shared that she was asked to be the running mate for Matt Entenza. He was a candidate from the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. Robyne said she was thinking seriously about it. She felt that being called to public service was an important decision. On May 27, 2010, the Entenza campaign announced she had accepted.

Some people criticized Fox 9 and Robyne. They felt it was not right for her to stay on air while considering a political role. They also thought the news should have mentioned the offer during their broadcasts.

Robyne was not the first Fox 9 News anchor to seek a statewide office. Former U.S. Senator Rod Grams also worked as an anchor for the station before entering politics. Robyne and Matt Entenza's campaign ended on August 10, 2010. Matt Entenza conceded, meaning he accepted that he had lost, as the election results came in.
