History of Rochester
Rochester was started in 1906 by a person named A. B. Carothers. This happened when the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway was being built through the area. The town was named after Rochester, New York, a much larger city.
Geography of Rochester
Rochester is in northwestern Haskell County. It is located along Texas State Highway 6. This highway goes north about 7 miles (11 km) to Knox City. It also goes south about 9 miles (14 km) to Rule. Haskell, which is the main town of the county, is about 15 miles (24 km) to the southeast.
The United States Census Bureau says that Rochester covers a total area of about 0.34 square miles (0.88 square kilometers). All of this area is land. There is no water within the town's limits.

For many years, from the early 1900s until 2005, Rochester had its own school district. It was called the Rochester Independent School District. The high school building was finished in 1938. It served as the high school until May 2005.
Because fewer and fewer students were enrolling, the school district merged. It joined with the Haskell CISD on June 1, 2005. Some students also moved to schools in Knox City and Rule during this time.
